EXIF remover: remove photo metadata and GPS location
See and remove hidden photo metadata (GPS location, camera, date) before you share. JPEG and PNG are cleaned without losing quality.
Runs on your deviceRuns entirely in your browser: nothing you type or upload leaves your device.
How to use it
- Drop the photos you want to share, or click to choose them.
- Review what each photo reveals: GPS location, camera, serial number, date and more.
- Download the clean copies and share those instead of the originals.
When a photo says more than you meant
Selling something online with photos taken at home, sending pictures of an apartment to a stranger, posting photos on your own website or blog, or sending a picture “as a document” on WhatsApp to keep its quality. Phone photos can carry the GPS coordinates of where they were taken, the date and time, the phone model, sometimes a serial number and the editing app.
Big social networks usually strip this data from the photos they publish. Files sent as documents, attached to emails, shared from a cloud drive or uploaded to your own website usually keep it. That's where this tool helps: drop the photos, see what each one reveals, and download clean copies.
What one living-room photo gave away
You drop IMG_2041.jpg, taken in your living room. The result shows “GPS location: 4.609710, -74.081750. Anyone with the original photo can see where it was taken.”, then the phone's make and model and the date taken. Those coordinates point to a spot within a few meters, which is enough to find the building.
Download the clean copy. Its size drops a little, and the note says “Image data untouched (no recompression).”: for JPEG and PNG we only cut out the metadata blocks, so the picture is identical. If the photo was taken sideways, “Kept only the rotation flag so the photo stays upright.” means we left that one small tag so it doesn't appear rotated.
What's in the picture itself stays
What's visible in the photo stays: a house number, a street sign, a school uniform, a license plate, a reflection in a window. This tool doesn't blur or crop anything, so check the picture itself before sharing it.
iPhone HEIC photos only open here if your browser can display them, which usually means Safari; otherwise convert them to JPG first. WebP and other formats are cleaned by re-drawing the image, which recompresses it, turns animated images into a still one and scales very large images down to 16 megapixels. The clean copy also loses its date taken, so your gallery may sort it by download date. Keep the originals if you want to remember where each photo was taken.
FAQ
Does removing EXIF reduce image quality?
Not for JPEG and PNG: we copy the image data byte for byte and only drop the metadata blocks. Other formats are re-drawn, which removes everything but recompresses the image.
Why does GPS location matter?
Phones often save the exact coordinates where a photo was taken. Anyone who gets the original file can see where you live, work or travel.
Can I check a photo's metadata without changing it?
Yes. Dropping a photo only reads it, in your browser, and lists what it carries; the original file is never modified. The clean version is a new file with `-clean` added to its name, and it is only saved if you download it.
Does WhatsApp remove the location from photos?
Photos sent the normal way are recompressed and usually lose their metadata. Photos sent as a document, to keep full quality, travel as the original file, metadata included. If you're not sure how a photo will be sent, clean it here first.
How do I stop my phone from saving the location in photos?
On iPhone, go to Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services, Camera, and choose Never. On Android, open the camera app's settings and turn off the option usually called Location tags or Save location; the name changes by brand. Photos you already took keep their location until you clean them.
