Tool 6.12

Add a text watermark to a PDF, in your browser

Stamp a word like DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL across the pages of a PDF, diagonal or horizontal, with the opacity and size you choose. The PDF isn't uploaded.

Runs on your deviceRuns entirely in your browser: nothing you type or upload leaves your device.

How to use it

  1. Drop the PDF, or click to choose it. Your browser reads it; it isn't uploaded.
  2. Type the watermark text, or click a preset: CONFIDENTIAL, COPY, DRAFT or SAMPLE.
  3. Choose the angle (diagonal or horizontal), the opacity (5 to 80%) and the size (20 to 100 pt). Leave Pages empty to mark every page, or type some, like 1-3, 5, and click Add watermark and download.

What a watermark tells the reader

A watermark is a word printed across the page, lighter than the text, that says what kind of document this is: DRAFT on a contract still under negotiation, COPY on a certificate you hand to a third party, SAMPLE on a design you show before the client pays, CONFIDENTIAL on figures meant for one reader.

This tool writes that word on each page as real PDF text, in bold Helvetica, dark grey and semi-transparent, centred on the page. The pages underneath aren't turned into pictures, so their text can still be selected and the file stays about the same size. It all happens in your browser.

Example: DRAFT on a 4-page lease

You drop arriendo.pdf, a 4-page lease you're still negotiating. Click the DRAFT preset, leave Diagonal (45°), opacity at 20% and size at 50 pt, and leave Pages empty. Click Add watermark and download: you get arriendo-watermarked.pdf, and the status line shows 4 pages and the new file size.

Open it. The word DRAFT runs through the middle of each page from bottom left to top right, and the clauses underneath can still be read. If one page was stored turned sideways, the word still comes out centred and at the same angle as on the other pages.

Long text, unusual characters, and what a watermark doesn't stop

The text goes on one line and isn't shrunk to fit. At 100 pt, CONFIDENTIAL laid horizontally is about 26 cm wide, more than an A4 or Letter page (21 and 21.6 cm), so both ends are cut off. For a long phrase, lower the size or use the diagonal, which has more room. The font is one of the basic fonts every PDF reader has: it writes accents and ñ, but not emoji or other alphabets, and the tool tells you when a character can't be written.

A watermark labels a document; it doesn't protect it. It's ordinary text added on top of the page, and anyone with a PDF editor can delete it. If a page holds data the reader must not see, remove that page with Delete PDF pages or cover the data before you send the file. A password-protected PDF can't be opened here: open it with its password and save or print a copy without one, or use Remove PDF password, which does use our server. Adding a watermark also invalidates any certificate-based digital signature already in the file.

FAQ

Can I remove the watermark later?

Not with this tool. The watermarked file is a new copy and your original PDF is left as it was, so keep the original and start from it again if you need a different mark.

What opacity should I use?

The default, 20%, is easy to see without hiding the text. On pages with small print or photos, try 10 to 15%; to make it hard to miss, 30 to 40%. Open the result and look at it before you send it.

Can I put a name or a date in the watermark?

Yes: type anything in Watermark text, for example `COPY FOR PEPITO PÉREZ` or `DRAFT 15/03/2026`. Putting the recipient's name on each copy tells you whose copy it was if the file gets passed around. With long text, lower the size so it isn't cut off.

Can I watermark only some pages?

Yes. Type them in Pages, for example `1, 3-5`, or `8-` for page 8 to the end. Leave it empty to mark every page.

Does the watermark show when printed?

Yes. It's drawn on the page like the rest of the content, so it prints the way you see it on screen.
