PDF to SVG: turn PDF pages into vector graphics

Turn each page of a PDF into an SVG for Illustrator, Inkscape, Figma or a browser, sharp at any size. Converted on our server, up to 30 pages.

Uses our serverWhen you press the button, the PDF goes over HTTPS to our server (api.ethorns.com), passing through Cloudflare, our network provider. It's converted in memory inside a sealed container with no internet access and deleted as soon as the SVG is sent back; we keep no copy, and the file name is never sent.

How to use it

  1. Drop the PDF, or click to choose it. Nothing is uploaded yet.
  2. Press Convert to SVG. The file goes to our server, which draws each page as an SVG.
  3. One page downloads as a .svg file; several pages download as a .zip with one SVG per page, up to the first 30.

When you need the drawing, not the document

Plans, logos, charts, patterns and illustrations often arrive inside a PDF. To use them in a design program, on a web page or in a cutting machine, you want them as SVG: a vector format, made of lines and curves, that stays sharp at any size, that browsers show directly and that Illustrator, Inkscape and Figma can edit.

This tool uses PyMuPDF on our server to redraw each page as an SVG, at the same size as the PDF page. The lines, shapes and colors of the PDF become SVG shapes you can select and recolor. Photos inside the PDF stay photos: they're embedded in the SVG as they are.

Example: a pattern that came in a PDF

A client sent you a pattern as estampado.pdf, a single page, and you need it in Illustrator to change its colors. Drop the file and press Convert to SVG. estampado.svg downloads; open it in Illustrator, and every leaf is a shape you can recolor.

If you drop catalogo.pdf, 12 pages, you get catalogo-svg.zip, with page-01.svg to page-12.svg inside. Unzip it and import only the pages you need. A 45-page PDF would give the first 30; to get the rest, split it first with Split PDF, which runs on your device.

Text becomes shapes, and other limits

Text is turned into outlines: each letter becomes a shape, so the page looks exactly like the PDF in any program, even one that doesn't have its fonts. The flip side is that you can't edit the words as text; for that, use PDF to Word. A scanned PDF is a photo of each page, so its SVG is just a photo too, with nothing to edit.

SVG files of pages full of detail, like maps or technical plans, can be heavy and slow to open. A file that asks for a password to open can't be converted: remove the password first with Remove PDF password, using the password you know.

FAQ

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

Yes. It's one of the few eThorns tools that use our server; PDF to JPG, Merge PDF and Split PDF run on your device. The PDF is converted in memory in a sealed container with no internet access, deleted as soon as the SVG is sent back, and never looked at or used for anything else.

Why do I get a .zip file?

An SVG holds a single page, so a PDF with several pages comes back as a .zip with one SVG per page, named `page-01.svg`, `page-02.svg` and so on. On Windows, right-click it and choose Extract All; on a Mac or a phone, just open it.

Can I edit the text in the SVG?

Not as text: the letters come out as shapes, so they look right everywhere but can't be retyped. You can still move, resize or recolor them. If you need to change the words, convert the PDF with PDF to Word.

Will it open in Illustrator, Inkscape or Canva?

Yes: it's a standard SVG. Illustrator and Inkscape open it for editing, Figma and Canva import it, and browsers show it directly. Very detailed pages can take a while to open.

Is there a size limit?

50 MB per file, the first 30 pages, and a few conversions per minute per person. At busy moments our server may ask you to try again in a minute. If a file takes too long, the tool says so: split it into parts.
