Word to PDF: convert Word, Excel and PowerPoint free
Turn a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file into a PDF without installing anything: .docx, .xlsx, .pptx, .doc, .xls, .ppt, .odt or .rtf. Converted on our server.
Uses our serverWhen you press the button, the file goes over HTTPS to our server (api.ethorns.com), passing through Cloudflare, our network provider. It's converted in memory inside a sealed container with no internet access and deleted as soon as the PDF is sent back; we keep no copy, and the file name is never sent.
How to use it
- Drop the file, or click to choose it: Word (.docx, .doc), Excel (.xlsx, .xls), PowerPoint (.pptx, .ppt), OpenDocument (.odt, .ods, .odp) or .rtf.
- Press Convert to PDF. Only then does the file go to our server.
- The PDF downloads by itself, with the same name as your file. Open it and check the pages before you send it.
When you need a PDF and don't have Office at hand
A job posting asks for your CV in PDF, a client wants the quote in a format they won't change by accident, or a teacher only accepts PDF. On a phone, a borrowed computer, or with an old .doc your apps can't open, there's no Save as PDF to press.
This tool, one of the few on eThorns that use our server, converts the file with LibreOffice, a free office suite. Macros never run, and linked content, such as a chart that pulls data from another file, isn't updated.
Example: a quote in Excel and a CV in Word
Say your quotes are made in Excel. You drop cotizacion-mayo.xlsx, press Convert to PDF and get cotizacion-mayo.pdf, but the 200-row price list below the quote comes out too, over several pages. The PDF follows the print area and page setup saved in the file, so in Excel you select the quote, use Page Layout, Print Area, Set Print Area, save and convert again.
Your CV in Word uses Calibri. Our server has look-alike fonts with the same measurements for Calibri, Cambria, Arial, Times New Roman and Courier New, so the layout usually matches and a two-page CV stays at two pages. A rare or custom font, like a decorative one for your name, is replaced with a similar one, and a line may shift slightly.
What can change on the way
Fonts are the main difference. If the document uses a font we don't have, embed it before converting (in Word for Windows: File, Options, Save, Embed fonts in the file), or check the PDF page by page.
A document that asks for a password to open can't be converted: open it, save a copy without the password and try again. The extension also has to match the contents: a PDF renamed to .docx is rejected before anything is uploaded. Once you have the PDF, the rest can stay on your device: Merge PDF joins it with other documents and Sign PDF adds your signature, without uploading anything.
FAQ
Do you keep or read my documents?
No. The file is converted in memory (a RAM disk) inside a sealed container with no internet access, and deleted as soon as the PDF is sent back. Nobody looks at it or uses it for anything else. The conversion log only records which tool ran, whether it worked and how long it took.
I have Word. Do I need this?
Not really. In Word, Excel or PowerPoint, File, Save as (or Export), PDF does it on your computer, with your own fonts and without uploading anything. This tool is for when you don't have them at hand.
Can I convert several files at once?
One at a time. To end up with a single PDF, convert each file and then join them with Merge PDF, which runs on your device.
Is there a size limit?
50 MB per file, and a few conversions per minute per person. Our server does one or two conversions at a time, so at busy moments it may ask you to try again in a minute.
Can I turn a PDF back into Word?
Yes, with PDF to Word, which also uses our server. It rebuilds paragraphs, tables and images, though a complex layout may need some tidying.
