Tool 3.7

SVG to PNG or JPG converter, at any size

Convert SVG files to PNG with a transparent background, or to JPG. Choose 1×, 2×, 4× or a width in pixels. Several at once; the files stay on your device.

Runs on your deviceRuns entirely in your browser: nothing you type or upload leaves your device.

How to use it

  1. Drop one or more SVG files, or click to choose them.
  2. Choose PNG for a transparent background, or JPG for a white one.
  3. Pick the size: 1×, 2×, 4×, or a width in pixels.
  4. Download each image, or all of them at once.

Why an SVG has to become a PNG

SVG is a vector format: it stores shapes as drawing instructions, not pixels, so it stays sharp at any size. That's how logos, icons and many illustrations are delivered. But plenty of places don't accept it: social networks, WhatsApp, most upload forms, online shops and many print shops ask for PNG or JPG. A PNG is a grid of pixels that opens anywhere and keeps transparency; a JPG opens anywhere too, but has no transparency.

Since an SVG has no fixed size in pixels, you choose one: 1× is the size written in the file, 2× and 4× give sharper images for phone screens and for print, and Width lets you ask for the exact pixels a site requires.

Example: a 120-pixel logo turned into a 1200-pixel PNG

The bakery panaderia-ejemplo.co sends you logo.svg. Its code says viewBox="0 0 120 40" and has no width or height, so at 1× the row reads 120×40 → 120×40: a tiny image, too small for a profile picture or a banner.

Choose Width and type 1200. Now the row reads 120×40 → 1200×400 and the file is logo.png, with a transparent background. The edges are sharp, because the browser draws the shapes again at 1200 pixels instead of enlarging a small picture. Choose JPG instead and the transparent areas turn white, which is what you want for a document with a white page.

Scripts, fonts and what doesn't come along

Each SVG is drawn by your browser as an image, the same way a web page shows a picture. In that mode the SVG's scripts don't run and nothing is loaded from the internet: no linked images, style sheets or web fonts. That makes it safe to convert a file from someone you don't know, but an SVG that depends on a web font is drawn with another font, and a linked image is left out. In your design program, convert the text to paths (outlines) and embed the images before exporting.

A file that isn't an SVG, or whose code is broken, is rejected with a message. An SVG without a width and height takes its size from its viewBox; with neither, it's treated as 1000 pixels wide. An animated SVG is saved as a still image, and anything over 16 megapixels is reduced to that size, the most every device can draw.

FAQ

Can I convert a PNG to SVG?

Not here: this tool only goes from SVG to pixels. Turning a PNG into a real SVG means tracing its shapes (vectorizing), which needs a design program or a tracing tool, and works well only for simple logos. A PNG placed inside an SVG file is still made of pixels and doesn't become sharper.

Does the PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. Areas where nothing is drawn stay transparent in the PNG. JPG has no transparency, so there they turn white.

Which size should I choose?

1× uses the size written in the SVG. For a website or an app, 2× looks sharp on phone screens. For printing, work out the pixels: a logo 10 cm wide at 300 dpi needs about 1181 pixels (10 ÷ 2.54 × 300), so choose Width and type 1181.

Why does the text look different from my design?

The SVG probably names a font that isn't installed on this device, or loads it from the internet, which an image never does. The browser then uses another font. In your design program, convert the text to paths (outlines) before exporting the SVG, and it will look the same everywhere.

Is it safe to convert an SVG someone sent me?

Here, yes. An SVG can carry scripts, like a web page, and opening it directly in a browser tab can run them. This tool only draws it as an image, where scripts don't run and nothing loads from the internet. Still, be careful about opening an unexpected SVG from an email directly in your browser.
