Tool 7.1

DIAN NIT check digit calculator (mod 11)

Calculate or check the DIAN verification digit (DV) of a Colombian NIT or cédula with the modulo 11 formula, and see the calculation step by step.

Runs on your deviceRuns entirely in your browser: nothing you type or upload leaves your device.

An informational estimate; not legal, employment or tax advice.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste a NIT or cédula number, with or without dots and spaces, or press one of the public institutions to try it.
  2. To check a DV you already have, type it after a hyphen, as in `800.197.268-4`: the tool says whether it is correct.
  3. Copy the DV or the full NIT, with or without dots. Open the step-by-step calculation to see the math.

What the digit after a NIT is for

The NIT (Número de Identificación Tributaria) is the number DIAN uses to identify a company or a person for tax purposes. On invoices, contracts, bank forms and tax returns it is written with one more digit after a hyphen, the verification digit or DV: in 800.197.268-4, DIAN's own NIT, the DV is 4.

The DV is calculated from the other digits, so a system can catch many typing mistakes, such as a wrong or missing digit, before the number is used. Type a NIT or a cédula and the tool gives its DV, the full NIT in two formats and the calculation step by step; type the DV too and it tells you whether it matches. The calculation runs in your browser.

How the modulo 11 formula works: an example

Take the fictional company tienda-ejemplo.co, with NIT 901234567. DIAN's formula multiplies each digit, from right to left, by a fixed series of prime numbers: 3, 7, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 37, 41, 43, 47, 53, 59, 67 and 71.

For 901234567, the multiplications from right to left are: 7×3=21, 6×7=42, 5×13=65, 4×17=68, 3×19=57, 2×23=46, 1×29=29, 0×37=0, and 9×41=369. They add up to 697. Divided by 11, that is 63 with a remainder of 4. When the remainder is 2 or greater, the verification digit is 11 minus the remainder: 11 − 4 = 7. The complete NIT is 901.234.567-7.

A correct DV is not a registered NIT

A correct DV only means the number is consistent; it is checked the way DIAN computes it (Estatuto Tributario art. 555-1 makes the NIT the taxpayer's identification). It doesn't show that the NIT is registered, that the company exists or that it is up to date with DIAN.

To check a supplier or a client, look up its RUT status on the DIAN website or its registration in the Registro Único Empresarial y Social (RUES). For a person who pays taxes with their cédula, the DV is calculated with the same formula on the cédula number.

FAQ

Should I type the DV in the NIT field?

It depends on the form. Many ask for the NIT without the DV and have a separate box for it; others want it after a hyphen, as in `800197268-4`. The tool gives both. Don't stick the DV onto the end of the number without the hyphen: `8001972684` is a different number.

Does a citizen ID (cédula) have a check digit?

The physical cédula doesn't show one, but when a person registers in the RUT as a taxpayer, DIAN calculates a DV from the cédula number with the same formula.

What happens if the remainder of the division is 0 or 1?

If the weighted sum divided by 11 leaves 0, the DV is 0; if it leaves 1, the DV is 1. Only for remainders from 2 to 10 is the DV 11 minus the remainder.

Why does electronic invoicing reject my NIT?

Invoicing systems usually check that the DV matches the base number. If the DV is missing or doesn't match, the invoice or the form can be rejected. Check the DV here, and check that the NIT itself belongs to the right company.

Does it work with cédulas of 8 or 10 digits?

Yes. The formula has 15 weights, so the tool takes any number of up to 15 digits; a shorter number uses the first weights, starting from the right. Dots, spaces and other symbols are ignored.
