PDF to Word: turn a PDF into an editable document

Turn a PDF into a Word document you can edit: paragraphs, tables and images come back as a .docx. Converted on our server; best with PDFs made from a text file.

Uses our serverWhen you press the button, the PDF goes over HTTPS to our server (api.ethorns.com), passing through Cloudflare, our network provider. It's converted in memory inside a sealed container with no internet access and deleted as soon as the Word file is sent back; we keep no copy, and the file name is never sent.

How to use it

  1. Drop the PDF, or click to choose it. Nothing is uploaded yet.
  2. Press Convert to Word. The file goes to our server, which rebuilds it as a .docx.
  3. The Word file downloads by itself. Open it and tidy up anything that moved.

When all you have left is the PDF

You wrote a contract, a CV or a report in Word, sent the PDF and lost the original. Now a date or a price has to change. Or a supplier sent a PDF form you have to fill in with a lot of text.

The converter, pdf2docx, reads where each line of text, table and image sits on the page, and rebuilds them as editable paragraphs, tables and pictures in a .docx file that opens in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice.

Example: changing a price in a quote

You exported a quote from Word as cotizacion-2026.pdf and then deleted the original. Drop the PDF and press Convert to Word: you get cotizacion-2026.docx. The intro is a normal paragraph you can type into, the price table is a real table with rows and columns, and the logo is an image you can move.

Change the price, check that the totals still add up (they're plain text now, not formulas) and save it as PDF again from Word. Before sending it, compare both versions page by page: a line that wraps differently is easy to fix, and just as easy to miss.

Scans, columns and forms

A scanned PDF is a set of photos of pages, with no text to rebuild, so the tool tells you so instead of returning a Word file full of pictures. Use Scanned PDF to text instead: it reads the words and can give you just the text as a .txt file to paste into Word. Running OCR on the scan first doesn't help here: the converter ignores the invisible text layer that OCR adds.

Complex layouts may need tidying: text in columns, forms and text boxes can come out split or out of place. A file that asks for a password to open can't be converted; save a copy without the password first. If you only need a few pages, cut them out first with Split PDF, which runs on your device.

FAQ

Why does this tool upload my PDF when the other PDF tools don't?

Rebuilding a PDF as a Word document is a job a browser can't do well on its own, so this is one of the few eThorns tools that use our server; Merge, Split and Sign PDF still run on your device. Nothing is uploaded until you press the button, and your browser names the download, so the file name is never sent.

What happens to my PDF on your server?

It's converted in memory (a RAM disk) inside a sealed container with no internet access, and deleted as soon as the Word file is sent back. We keep no copy, never look at it and never use it for anything else. The conversion log only records which tool ran, whether it worked and how long it took.

Will it look exactly like the PDF?

Close, but not identical: Word lays out text its own way, so a line can wrap differently or a table grow a little. PDFs exported from a text document come out best.

Is there a size limit?

50 MB per file, and a few conversions per minute per person. Our server does one or two conversions at a time, so at busy moments it may ask you to try again in a minute.
