PDF to PNG: convert PDF pages to sharp images

Convert PDF pages to PNG images in your browser: lossless, with crisp text and lines. Pick the resolution and the pages. No uploads.

Runs on your deviceRuns entirely in your browser: nothing you type or upload leaves your device.

How to use it

  1. Drop a PDF, or click to choose it.
  2. Leave PNG selected and pick the resolution: High (144 dpi), or Very high (216 dpi) for small print.
  3. Type the pages you want, or leave the box empty for all of them.
  4. Download one page from under its preview, or all pages at once.

When PNG beats JPG for a PDF page

PNG is lossless: it saves every pixel exactly as the page was drawn. JPG saves space by blurring fine detail a little, and on sharp edges that shows up as faint smudges around letters and thin lines. For a page that is mostly text, tables, charts or line drawings, PNG keeps it crisp, and because those pages are mostly flat white, the file stays reasonable.

That makes PNG the better choice for a slide or a chart you'll paste into a presentation, a page of a manual for another document, a proof you send to a client, or a page you'll keep editing in a drawing program, since a PNG can be saved again without losing more quality. For scanned pages and photos, JPG is usually better: the PNG of a photo weighs several times more and doesn't look any different.

Example: a price list as sharp images

You drop lista-precios.pdf, three Letter-size pages with a table of products. Choose Very high (216 dpi) and the tool says Page 1 comes out at 1836 × 2376 px: the page measures 8.5 × 11 inches, and 216 dots per inch give those pixels.

Click Download all and you get lista-precios-page-1.png, lista-precios-page-2.png and lista-precios-page-3.png. A page of text like this one usually weighs well under 1 MB as PNG; a page full of photos can take several megabytes. If you only need the second page, type 2 in Pages, or use the Download button under its preview.

What a PNG of a page can't do

The page becomes pixels. You can't select, search or copy its text, and its links stop working. The background isn't transparent either: a PDF page is drawn on white, like paper, so the PNG is white wherever the page is.

An image can't be sharper than its source: a blurry scan stays blurry at any resolution. Very large pages, like plans or posters, are reduced to 16 megapixels so every device can draw them, and the tool tells you when that happens. A password-protected PDF needs an unprotected copy first. Everything runs in your browser, so a big PDF on an old phone can take a while.

FAQ

Is my PDF uploaded to convert it to PNG?

No. Your browser opens the PDF, draws each page and saves the PNG on your device. The file is never sent to eThorns or anyone else, so it also works for contracts, bank statements and other private documents.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No. A PDF page is drawn on white, like paper, so the PNG keeps that white background. If you need a logo without a background, ask for the original file (an SVG, or a PNG with transparency) instead of a PDF.

Why is the PNG heavier than the PDF?

A PDF stores text as letters and fonts, which take very little space, while a PNG stores every pixel. A page of text that takes a few KB inside the PDF can become a PNG of 100 KB or more. Choose a lower resolution, or JPG for scanned pages and photos.

Which resolution do I need to print a page?

Very high (216 dpi) prints text clearly at the page's own size. For a poster or a big enlargement, give the print shop the PDF: it keeps text sharp at any size, which no image can.

How do I turn the PNG images back into a PDF?

Use JPG to PDF: it also takes PNG images and puts one per page, in the order you choose, in your browser too. The text stays an image, so it still can't be selected or searched.
