Add page numbers to a PDF, in your browser
Stamp page numbers on a PDF as 1, 1 / 12 or Page 1 of 12, in one of six positions, from any start number, skipping the cover if you want. Nothing is uploaded.
Runs on your deviceRuns entirely in your browser: nothing you type or upload leaves your device.
How to use it
- Drop the PDF, or click to choose it. A numbered preview of each page appears below.
- Pick the format, the position and the number to start at. Tick Skip the first page (cover) if the cover shouldn't carry a number.
- Leave Pages empty to number them all, or type the ones to number, like 2-10. Click Add page numbers and download.
One sequence for a file put together from parts
A proposal, a thesis or a court filing often ends up as one PDF made of pieces: a cover from a design program, the body from Word, annexes that were scanned. Each part brings its own numbering or none, and the reader needs a single sequence to write “see page 14”.
This tool writes the numbers on top of the existing pages, in 10 pt Helvetica, dark grey, half an inch (about 1.3 cm) from the edges. Nothing else on the page moves. It runs in your browser; the PDF isn't uploaded.
Example: a 12-page proposal with a cover
propuesta.pdf has 12 pages, and page 1 is the cover. Choose Page 1 of 12, Bottom right, leave Start at on 1 and tick Skip the first page (cover). Click Add page numbers and download: you get propuesta-numbered.pdf.
The cover has no number. Page 2 reads “Page 1 of 11” and page 12 reads “Page 11 of 11”: the total is the last number printed, not the number of sheets. To make the numbers match the sheets, set Start at to 2: the pages then read “Page 2 of 12” to “Page 12 of 12”, and the cover still has none.
Where the number lands, and what can go wrong
The number goes where you chose, measured on the page as it's shown, so on a page stored sideways it still reads upright. The tool doesn't look for empty space: if the page already has a footer, an old page number or a letterhead in that spot, the new number is printed on top of it. Check the previews first and pick a position that's free.
When you type pages in Pages, only those get a number, in page order, and Skip the first page is ignored. Typing 3-10 with Start at 1 puts 1 on page 3 and 8 on page 10. A password-protected PDF can't be opened here: open it with its password and save or print a copy without one. Adding numbers rewrites the file, so a certificate-based digital signature inside it stops validating.
FAQ
How do I number a PDF without numbering the cover?
Tick Skip the first page (cover): numbering starts on page 2, with the number in Start at. To leave out more than the cover, say a cover and a table of contents, leave the box unticked and type the pages to number, like `3-40`.
Can I start numbering at a number other than 1?
Yes: type it in Start at. It helps with an annex that continues a main document: if the main file ends on page 48, start the annex at 49.
Can I use Roman numerals or letters?
No. The formats are `1`, `1 / 12` and `Page 1 of 12`, always in ordinary digits.
Can I change the font, size or color?
No. The numbers are always 10 pt Helvetica in dark grey. You choose the format, the position and the first number.
How do I number several PDFs as one sequence?
Join them first with Merge PDF and number the merged file. Or number each file on its own and set Start at so each one continues where the previous one ended.
