Colombian 4×1000 bank tax & exemption calculator

Work out the 4×1000 (GMF) on a withdrawal or transfer in Colombia, with or without the monthly 350 UVT exemption for savings accounts, for 2025 or 2026.

Runs on your deviceRuns entirely in your browser: nothing you type or upload leaves your device.

An informational estimate; not legal, employment or tax advice.

How to use it

  1. Choose the tax year (2026 or 2025) and type the amount of the withdrawal or transfer in Colombian pesos.
  2. Leave the 350 UVT exemption ticked if the money leaves your exempt savings account, and type what you've already withdrawn from it this month. Untick it for a checking account or an account without the exemption.
  3. Read the 4×1000 to pay, the total debited from the account, what arrives if the tax comes out of the amount, and how much of the monthly exemption is left. The calculation runs in your browser.

How the 4×1000 is charged in Colombia

The Gravamen a los Movimientos Financieros (GMF), known in Colombia as the 4×1000, is a national tax on bank withdrawals, electronic transfers, cashier's checks and other debits. The rate is 4 per thousand (0.4%): the bank withholds $4 for every $1,000 that leaves the account.

It began in 1998 as a temporary 2×1000 to rescue the mortgage banking system (Decreto 2331 de 1998) and later became a permanent national tax administered by DIAN. Because it's charged on every movement, it adds up on large payments: buying a car, paying suppliers, moving savings between your own accounts at different banks.

The monthly 350 UVT exemption: a worked example

Article 879, numeral 1 of the Estatuto Tributario exempts withdrawals of up to 350 UVT a month from savings accounts, low-value digital deposits and prepaid cards. For 2026 (with UVT at $52,374), 350 UVT equals a monthly tax-free limit of $18,331,000 (rounded as Article 868 of the Estatuto Tributario says).

Say you withdraw $20,000,000 in 2026, with no earlier withdrawals that month. If the account isn't exempt, the whole amount is taxed: $20,000,000 × 0.004 = $80,000. With the 350 UVT exemption, the first $18,331,000 pays nothing and the 4×1000 applies only to the rest: $20,000,000 − $18,331,000 = $1,669,000, and $1,669,000 × 0.004 = $6,676. On this one withdrawal the exemption saves $73,324.

Checking accounts, the monthly reset and the marked account

Checking accounts (cuentas corrientes) don't get the 350 UVT exemption. Under Article 879, numeral 1 of the Estatuto Tributario it covers only savings accounts, low-value digital deposit accounts and prepaid cards, so a checking account pays the 0.4% on its debits unless another exemption in that article applies.

The limit starts again on the first calendar day of each month, and whatever you didn't use doesn't carry over. The 2022 tax reform (Ley 2277, which added Article 881-1 to the Estatuto Tributario) orders banks to apply the exemption without the account being marked. Until your bank's system does that, the old rule still works: you mark one account as exempt.

FAQ

What is the 4×1000 rate in Colombia?

0.4%, that is, four pesos for every thousand pesos moved. Banks and other financial institutions withhold it automatically on withdrawals, transfers and disbursements.

How much is the monthly 350 UVT exemption?

Under Article 879 numeral 1 of the Estatuto Tributario, up to 350 UVT a month is exempt. In 2025 that is $17,430,000; in 2026 it is $18,331,000.

Can I have more than one exempt account?

The exemption is for one account per person across the whole financial system, which is why you mark it at your bank. Since Ley 2277 de 2022 (Article 881-1 of the Estatuto Tributario), banks must apply it without the marking; until yours does, keep one account marked.

Are transfers between my accounts at the same bank taxed?

Under Article 879 numeral 14 of the Estatuto Tributario, transfers between accounts that belong to the same single holder at the same financial institution are exempt from the 4×1000.

Does the calculator count what I already withdrew this month?

Yes, if you type it. With the exemption ticked, the field for previous withdrawals this month subtracts that amount from the 350 UVT, and the result shows only the part of the limit you have left.
