Text compare: find differences between two texts
Paste two versions of a text and see every added and removed line highlighted, with the changed words marked. Ignore whitespace or case. Runs in your browser.
Runs on your deviceRuns entirely in your browser: nothing you type or upload leaves your device.
How to use it
- Paste the original text on the left (or top) box.
- Paste the changed version in the other box. The comparison runs in your browser; nothing is sent.
- Review the result: green lines were added, red lines were removed. Copy the diff if you need it.
Finding what changed in a contract sent back to you
Someone returns a contract, a quote or a policy with "a few small adjustments", and there is no track changes to show them. Reading both versions side by side, it's easy to miss the one number that matters. Pasting both here shows every line that was added, removed or edited.
It works just as well for other text: two versions of an essay, a list of products before and after an update, two exports of the same report, or a configuration file that stopped working.
Example: a lease clause with two changes
Paste three lines of the original: FIRST. Purpose., then The tenant will pay $1,200 on the 5th of each month., then SECOND. Term. In the other box, paste the version you received, where the middle line now says $1,300 and 10th.
The result reads +1 added, −1 removed. The line starting with − (red) is the old one, the line with + (green) is the new one, and inside them only 200 → 300 and 5th → 10th are highlighted, not the whole sentence. The unchanged lines around it are shown for context, so you know where in the document the change is.
When the comparison looks wrong
The comparison goes line by line, and a line ends wherever there is a line break. Text copied from a PDF often has a break at the end of every visual line; if one version was copied from a PDF and the other from Word, almost everything will look changed even when the words are the same. Copy both from the same kind of source, or join the lines first.
A paragraph that was moved shows up as removed in one place and added in another. Only the text is compared, so changes in bold, fonts or colours don't appear. With very different texts, over 3,000 changes, the tool stops matching line by line and shows everything as replaced.
FAQ
Can I compare two lists, like two Excel columns?
Yes: paste each list with one item per line. The comparison follows the order of the lines, so an item that only moved shows up as removed in one place and added in another. If order doesn't matter, sort both lists A to Z first (the remove duplicate lines tool does that), then compare them.
What does ignore whitespace do?
It treats lines as equal when they differ only in spaces, tabs or indentation, so you can focus on real content changes.
What do the @@ lines mean?
They mark each block of changes in standard unified diff format: the line number and number of lines in the original (−) and changed (+) text.
Can I compare two Word or PDF files?
Not the files themselves: paste their text. Open each file, select all (Ctrl+A), copy and paste it into its box. For Word documents with formatting, Word's own Review, Compare also shows changes in format.
Does it show changes inside a line?
Yes. When a line was edited rather than added or deleted, the changed words are highlighted inside the red and green lines, so you can spot a different number or a missing "not" in a long paragraph.
