Tool 3.4

Image resizer: resize photos online, free

Resize images by pixels or percentage, or change the aspect ratio (1:1, 4:5, 9:16…) by cropping or adding borders. Presets for Instagram and YouTube.

Runs on your deviceRuns entirely in your browser: nothing you type or upload leaves your device.

How to use it

  1. Drop one or more images, or click to choose them.
  2. Enter a width and height or a percentage, pick an aspect ratio, or click a preset like 1080×1920 for stories.
  3. If the shape changes, choose Crop to fill or Fit with borders, then download each image.

When a site asks for exact pixels or a shape

Some upload forms don't care about the weight of a photo but about its size in pixels: "photo of 300×400 pixels", "logo at least 500 pixels wide", "banner of 1200×630". A phone photo is usually 3000 or 4000 pixels on each side, so it gets rejected or cropped badly by the site.

Social networks ask for a shape as well as a size. A story, a Reel, a TikTok or a WhatsApp status fills a vertical screen, 9:16, at 1080×1920 pixels. An Instagram post is square (1:1) or a bit taller (4:5, 1080×1350), a YouTube thumbnail is 1280×720 (16:9) and a link preview is 1200×630. Upload a horizontal photo as a story and the app decides what to cut. Here you decide: crop it to the new shape, or keep all of it with borders.

Resizing is also the first step to make an image lighter. Halving the width and height leaves a quarter of the pixels, which usually cuts the file size by a lot before any compression. The images are resized in your browser and aren't uploaded.

Example: a horizontal photo as a 9:16 story

Your photo, foto.jpg, is 4032×3024: horizontal. Click the 1080×1920 preset: it fills in the width and height and sets the ratio to 9:16. With Crop to fill, the row reads 4032×3024 → 1080×1920: the tool keeps a vertical strip from the centre of the photo, 1701 pixels wide, and cuts the rest equally from the left and right edges. The file is named foto-1080x1920.jpg.

Choose Fit with borders instead. The size is still 1080×1920, but now the whole photo sits in the middle at 1080×810, with a band of 555 pixels above and below. Pick white or black bands, or transparent ones if the image is a PNG or WebP; a JPG gets white. The same works for any ratio without a preset: choose 1:1 and the photo becomes a square for a post, at its own resolution.

Crops, borders, enlarging and other surprises

The crop always keeps the centre. If your face or product is near an edge, crop the photo in your gallery first, or use Fit with borders so nothing is lost. Nothing is ever stretched: with the Original ratio and Keep proportions on, the image fits inside the width and height; turn it off to get that exact size, with the same crop or borders.

You can also enlarge an image, with a percentage over 100 or a bigger width, but it will look blurry: resizing can't invent detail that the photo never had. The copy keeps its format (JPG, PNG or WebP; other formats come out as PNG), at high quality, and without the hidden data (EXIF) such as the GPS location. Resizing doesn't aim at a weight in KB: if the form also has a size limit, run the result through the image compressor.

FAQ

Will my image be stretched?

Never. When the shape changes, Crop to fill cuts the edges from the centre and Fit with borders adds bands around the whole image. With the Original ratio and Keep proportions on, the image simply fits inside the size you set.

Which size should I use for a link preview (OG image)?

1200×630 pixels is the standard for Facebook, LinkedIn, X and WhatsApp link previews.

What size is a story, a Reel or a WhatsApp status?

1080×1920 pixels, a vertical 9:16 shape; TikTok uses the same. Click the 1080×1920 preset. For a horizontal photo, Crop to fill covers the whole screen but loses the sides, while Fit with borders keeps the whole photo with bands above and below.

How do I make a photo square without cropping it?

Choose the 1:1 ratio and Fit with borders. The whole photo stays, centred, and bands fill the rest of the square: white or black, or transparent if the image is a PNG or WebP. To also set the size, type it in width and height, for example 1080 and 1080, or click the 1080×1080 preset and switch to Fit with borders.

How many pixels is a 3×4 cm photo?

It depends on the print resolution. At 300 dpi, the usual one for printing, 3×4 cm is about 354×472 pixels (divide the centimetres by 2.54 and multiply by 300). If a form gives the size in pixels, use those numbers: the pixels are what the site checks.

Why is the result blurry?

Either the image was enlarged, or it was very small to begin with. Start from the original, largest version of the photo and only make it smaller. Screenshots of a photo and images forwarded on WhatsApp are often already reduced.
